Carvings for solo violin now released on CD and iTunes with Madelene Berg

The violinist Madelene Berg made her second performance on the release of the record Nine solos for nine violinists on the 8th of July 2012. She made despite an injury in her left palm (she has to undergo a surgery). Dagfinn has written the following booklet note:

Carvings – Two rediscover the song the soul once sung (Allan Pettersson), for solo violin.

Carvings were written in 2009 on the initiative of the Norwegian composer association. The introduction is meditative, like a kind of seed the song grows out of. There are still unlimited songs to rediscover, that the soul once sang. The word ”melody” stems from Greek, meaning to sing. I am very excited about the music of the Swedish composer Allan Pettersson (1911-1980). His music covers a wide emotional register, and a questioning of life’s existential dimension. Pettersson struggled with chronic illness, something I have personal experience with. It affectes the way one sense and ingest the world. And there aren’t many people one can share that individual experience with. Melancholy is very essential in my works. I think that melancholy, among other things can be an expression of an existential longing, loss, pain and loneliness. Originally, melancholy was one of the 4 temperaments; choleric, melancholic, sanguine and phlegmatic. In modern psychiatry melancholy is linked to bipolar disorder.

The work was premiered by Madelene Berg in Oslo on 29 September, 2010. The piece is dedicated to Malin.
